Women Developers

While it's heartening to see so many entries from developers all around the world, I'm a bit disappointed to see that there are so few women developers in the fray. Perhaps, for the next edition, you should take a cue from LinkedIn women hackday (http://blog.linkedin.com/2012/06/22/developher-hackday) and other similar contests and have a dedicated prize for women developers (similar to one for Japan devs) as well.

Thoughts?

    Hi Ritika!

We actually won't know the final gender breakdown for developers until the competition is closed. Either way, your suggestion is a great - our team has been really inspired by the recent "Women who Code" movement in SF and we want to be apart of this as our Developer community expands http://www.meetup.com/Women-Who-Code-SF/. The prize idea is excellent - thank you very much!

Wow, great to see the response. @Chris, perhaps, you shouldn't really wait for next year then :) It would be really cool to see another prize being added for the best entry by a women developer for this year's edition.

Not sure if that's feasible at this stage though. Anyway, I hope there are a few women developers (without the dedicated prize) in the finals anyway :D

@Chris, will you be releasing compiled stats on the entries? I think I would be curious to see the gender break down, and even the locations of developers.

@Ritika, I think your idea for a separate prize is a good idea.
Full discloser though, the project I worked on, FlowBoard had a mixed gender team. :)

With a few hours to go, I'm excited and nervous about the results. I saw the last year's finalist video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeAxOdNfhqA and it was great to see a women developer make it to the finals. I hope history repeats itself this year (even if it's not me and someone else :)

    Good luck to everyone!
